449 viewsWe activated Crockford-Pigeon Mtn. Wildlife Management Area today (1-26-2023) at our Dougherty Gap location. We were hoping the sun would break through the clouds and spread a little warmth. That didn't happen, the wind blew, it was cold and it occasionally spit a little snow.
Allen KN4FKS worked off the Cameleon vertical with the extendable whip and four radials on 20 and 15 meters. Sixty contacts were made with 14 P2P and 3 Canadians. Danny Wooten AG4DW sat in Winston with Allen and handled logging duties keeping everything straight. John KB4QXI used his end fed half wave wire with the end up in a tree and rigged as a sloper with the feed on the ground. He covered 40 meters with 20 contacts and 1 P2P. He kept getting covered up by rag chewers who could not hear him.
Our CW whiz kid, Peter KX4BE used his new 75A Tarheel antenna on the 30, 20, 17, 15, and 12 bands. He had 84 contacts with 10 DX (all on 15m) and 2 P2P.

449 viewsMade it ! Reached a POTA milestone for Cloudland Canyon State Park K-2169 Thursday. The 'KILO' award is for making one thousand contacts from a specific park. (see attached photo)
The space weather cooperated for an exceptional day and the terrestrial weather cooperated as well by not being to hot in our shady location at the Ascalon Trailhead.
In addition to our radio gear we had two 12 volt fans running off battery power. Allen KN4FKS started off on 20 meters with Danny AG4DW logging.. Fred KQ4JXX provided adult supervision for the crew. Allen KN4FKS made a total of 107 contacts with 12 P2P and 13 Canadian contacts. After lunch Danny AG4DW got on 20 and made a quick 14 contacts before it just was getting too warm to be fun. Even on top of the mountain and in the shade it was 90 degrees F.
The rig we used was my trusty old ICOM 706 Mk IIG at 100 watts with 50 ft of RG-8-X coax feeding and end fed half wave rigged as a sloper with the balun on the ground stake. To make 107 contacts the battery meter showed only 6.5 amp hours of the 20 Ahr battery used. Fun day was had by all even after getting wasp stung.

449 viewsLast Thursday was hot. Chattanooga hit 101 f. It is certainly nice having friends especially DNR ranger types who let us use the check station at Pigeon Mountain US-3742 to activate from. Air conditioning, a bathroom, and full kitchen, sweet! We set up two stations with antennas on opposite sides of the building and shared operator time. One problem with the check station site is that it sits at the base of a large steep mountain to the west. Contacts there just never come from anywhere out west. You work east and north stations for the most part.
Danny AG4DW made 60 total contacts , 7 on SSB the rest on FT8, 30 were from the USA and 30 were DX into Europe. Allen KN4FKS had 48 contacts on 40 meters with 5 Park to Park contacts. Tony WA4TW made 56 contacts with 4 P2P. Peter KX4BE plugged in his key and made 12 CW contacts.
A fun day. When we were finished for the day going outside to take the antennas down was quite a shock, it had gotten really hot and muggy outside. It's nice having friends. Both ham radio and with DNR.
I hear that now Tony has a nice new 'Hide a Key" for his car.
